Kevin Hassett Criticizes Fed Independence and Data Reliability
Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council and a key economic adviser to former President Trump, has openly questioned the Federal Reserve's independence and transparency. During an appearance on CBS' Face the Nation, Hassett emphasized the need for a nonpartisan review of the Fed's regulatory and monetary policy roles, echoing concerns about "mission creep" raised in a Wall Street Journal op-ed by Treasury Secretary Bessent.
Hassett also cast doubt on the reliability of current labor market data, citing significant discrepancies between payroll and household surveys. He argued for modernization of data collection methods, pointing to private-sector alternatives like Homebase as potential models for improvement.
